Update September 28th: I swung by Gatorhole plaza this morning and noticed the progress on the soon-to-be open Petco.
The store seems to be nearly finished and stocked and two signs on the door caught my eye. The first stated that they were still looking for "Experienced Groomers" and the second said that they would be opening on October 7th, 2012.
The opening will be of great relief for northend pet lovers who dread driving all the way down to the Coastal Grand Mall area for the other "big box" pet supply shop.
First Report August 8th: Petco is opening at the new Sayebrook Town Center, along side shopping center's first anchor store, Target.
Besides Petco and Target, the 544 location is also getting a Marshalls, which is the second location on the Grand Strand. The first being at Arcadian Shores Commons off of 22, across from Tanger outlet mall. According to The Sun News, the Petco at Sayebrook is slated to open on Friday, September 21, 2012.
However, no mention in local media (that I have found) has been made of Petco's other location at Gator Hole Plaza in North Myrtle Beach, that they have been working on for quite some time.
Construction has been happening for months now, and their signage has already been placed on both above the store location and on the plaza's Highway 17 roadside signage that displays all the retail stores therein.
Interestingly, there was a Craigslist post last month advertising a job fair for both locations. The Job fair was held on July 11th and 12th at the Myrtle Beach Broadway Courtyard Marriott. At the time Petco was hiring for Assistant Managers, Department Managers, Sales Associates (full and part time), Dog Trainers and Grooming Salon staff. It looks as though Petco may still be hiring for the Gator Hole Plaza location as the jobs listings is still on their website, which can be found here.
I tried called several numbers and left messaged to get some information on when the North Myrtle Beach Petco location might be open but have not received any return calls.
We will keep you posted.
